GIQ Coal is a GI course for anyone already working in the Queensland coal mining industry. The GIQ Coal course was developed in response to the introduction of Standard 11, the new Standard for meeting health and safety obligations in the coal mining industry in Queensland in 2011.
The course is primarily designed for short-term contractors who move between multiple sites and have current industry experience relevant to their role, e.g. trade experience, heavy industry experience or mining experience.
Delivery
The GIQ Coal course includes optional pre-course learning, the core course and an optional elective.
Units of competency
The units of competency covered in the GIQ Coal course include:
GIQ Coal Surface
- RIIOHS201A – Work safely and follow OHS policies and procedures
- RIIERR205A – Apply initial response first aid
- RIIGOV201A – Comply with site work processes/procedures
- RIIRIS201B – Conduct local risk control
- RIICOM201A – Communicate in the workplace
- RIIERR302A – Respond to local emergencies and incidents
GIQ Coal Underground (additional unit)
- RIIERR203A – Escape from a hazardous situation unaided
Course validity
Recently the refresher period for the GIQ Coal course was changed from two years to every five years, in an industry-led change designed to create more flexibility. This means individuals can refresh their induction at the discretion of mining companies, within a five year period.
The GIQ coal course refresher period is different to the remainder of the GI suite, which must be refreshed every two years.
Course costs
GIQ Coal courses are delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that who can assist with the identification of appropriate skills and experience needed to do the GIQ Coal course. Please contact your local Licensed GI Provider for information on course costs and dates.
